A man who had just received his Social Amelioration Program benefit was shot Monday while on his way home to Bayawan City.

The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office identified the victim as a certain Bugoy Tecson, resident of barangay Manduao, Bayawan City, more than 100 kilometers south of here.

Initial police investigation showed that the incident took place in Purok 1, Barangay San Jose.

Tecson was on his way home after receiving the amelioration assistance when his assailant suddenly appeared and without provocation shot him.

He was taken to the Dawis District Hospital in Bayawan.

The incident was reported to the police about an hour later.

A suspect has been identified, one Menard Subrada, 35, resident of Barangay San Jose.

He remains at large and had fled with the victim’s money, Provincial Police Director Col. Julian Entoma said.

Entoma urged the public to be cautious after receiving their SAP benefits as some unscrupulous individuals may take advantage of them during the distribution of the government assistance.

He also said they have received reports that some beneficiaries of the Unconditional Cash Transfer and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program had engaged in “tigbakay” or illegal cockfighting soon after they received their financial aid. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)
