Back in 1988 (or 12 years before the MetroPost was even born), when news spread that a Cebu-based businessman was to open the biggest department store in Dumaguete, people got excited they will finally get to see a store with an escalator right in the City.

On opening day, Dec. 18, 1988, people lined up for hours (in what is now Ever Mall) to see what the inside of Lee Plaza looked like. The lines were so long the management had to impose time limits on the batches of shoppers who were allowed in.

Several business owners, however, feared that this big store would soon  force all the mom & pop stores out of business. The owner of the building that Lee Plaza leased revealed that they were receiving threats on the phone for renting their space to the new store.

In no time, however, Lee Plaza gained a spot in the hearts of Dumagueteños and the business community, which welcomed the Lee family as one of their own.

They were also recognized as good corporate citizens. Lee Plaza, through its corporate name Dynamic Development Corp., was recognized as the second highest taxpayer in Dumaguete in 2022. They also employed hundreds of local workers  as they expanded to open Lee Super Plaza then LP Hypermart in Bagacay, as well as stores in Bayawan City and in Dipolog City.

“Some good things never last,” as Barbara Streisand sang.

Lee Plaza’s announcement of its closure starting Monday, Feb. 5, and that of Hypermart on Thursday, Feb.8, brought back beautiful memories in the minds and hearts of shoppers and  the workforce who took to social media to thank Lee Plaza for the 35 years that it became a part of their lives.

We hope the next store that would replace Lee Plaza would continue the goodwill that was started, which has been embedded in the Dumaguete community these past years.
