A pair of students from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial- Dumaguete Science High School emerged champions in the Philippine National Science Quiz held Dec. 13 at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center, SM Mall of Asia in Manila.

Alec Benjamin G. Ramirez and Hannah Jael M. Cadusale, senior and junior Science High students respectively, bested teams from 20 other secondary schools all over the country. They represented Region 7 after having won in the regional qualifying round. They were coached by Lourdes Lee, their teacher at Science High.

The Dumaguete Science High team took home the 1st prize of P30,000 cash, a medal of recognition for each team member, a trophy for the school, and a plaque of recognition for the coach.

Garnering the 2nd and 3rd prizes were students from Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus, and PSHS-Southern Mindanao Campus.

The National Science Quiz is the first ever national nuclear quiz organized outside of the National Capital Region by the Department of Science & Technology’s Philippine Nuclear Research Institute. The quiz was conducted in 15 regions of the country, in collaboration with the Department of Education and DOST regional offices.

The aim of the conduct of the quiz is to enhance awareness, understanding, and interest of the Filipino youth on nuclear science and technology, and its beneficial applications. The quiz was in line with the celebration of the 40th Atomic Energy Week with the theme: “Nuclear Science, Technology & Innovation: Engine for Growth & Development.”

The annual Atomic Energy Week celebration, as mandated under Proclamation No. 1211 in 1973, aims to generate awareness of the Filipino people on the beneficial uses of nuclear technology. (DOST-Negros Oriental)
