With the move of the Department of Education to increase the number of years of the basic education curriculum of the Philippines, the K to 12 program on its continuing progress, arouses excitement among teachers in both public and private elementary and secondary schools .
The K to 12 curriculum adopts the spiral approach in every subject from Grade 1 to 10.
This means that the curriculum is progressing from basic knowledge to more complex concepts and ideas to develop the critical thinking skills of the learners.
In Grades 11 and 12 (Senior High School), the students are required to take up 15 contextualized and nine specialized subjects to complete the program.
Schools offering senior high school tracks are also based on the local industries existing in the locality.
There is also a built-in technical-vocational (tech-voc) strand in program.
The Technical Education & Skills Development Authority will also award a National Certificate to students who have successfully passed the assessment program.
This gives senior high graduates the opportunity to be employed in their respective hometowns when they have been certified as having mastered the skill that they trained for at TESDA.
