Sharpen the saw: attend a convention

Whew! What an exhilarating, memorable, and awesome week. I was set on not attending the 97th Foundation Anniversary, 62nd Nurses Week Celebration and National Annual Convention 2019 of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) with the theme: Beyond HealthCare to Health at the Waterfront Hotel, Lahug, Cebu City, October 22-24, 2019. However, one of my colleagues (and former student) Dean Theresa A. Guinoo, whom I met in our office at the Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) last Monday reminded me that I have to attend the National Convention because I am a House of Delegate (HOD) representative from our Dumaguete City Chapter.

Nurses should think seriously about attending a nursing conference. Despite their hectic schedules, nurses agree that conferences support professional development and career growth. Consider these benefits: (1) Get help with professional development; (2) enjoy knowledge-sharing opportunities, through conversations, and inform sharing which may include: experiences and challenges, new products, innovative techniques, and technology; (3) participate in continuing education; (4) benefit from networking; reduce stress and have fun (WSi Healthcare personnel. Why you should be attending nursing conferences. August 18, 2017).

Here are four potentially major ways attending professional conferences could benefit your career: (South University. Four ways attending a professional conference can help get you ahead. March 19, 2015):

1. Meet like-minded friends and colleagues

2. Renew excitement about your field

3. Take the pulse of industry trends; and

4. Return to the workplace with valuable learning.

Some benefits of attending a conference include (Should I attend a conference? Fastaff travel nursing, March 15,2016): (1) educational opportunities; (2) networking; (3) a chance to see into the future; (4) develop your leadership skills; and (5) let your hair down — enjoy a little downtime with your fellow nurses. All work and no play makes one a dull nurse.

In addition to what has been mentioned above, Jennifer Olin (RN Central. Seven reasons you should go to as nursing convention, March 23, 2012) claims that “One of the great things about attending an annual meeting is bringing what you learn back to your colleagues at home, that is, build your reputation at home.” Share materials, pictures and your notes with your friends. Finally, Olin emphasizes that when you are attending a meeting or convention, go for it because this a chance to break out of the routine. Explore the place and collect fond memories as well.

So to all my fellow nurses, let us sharpen the saw: be sure to attend a conference or convention next time and get the most out of the experience. Explore possibilities of being funded by your employer or save up to help defray the expenses, but do not miss the opportunity.

To our colleagues in Region VII, (led by Governor, Dr. Marylou Ong) who hosted the recent National Convention of the PNA, we congratulate you for a job well done. Mabuhay ang PNA!
