The National Meat Inspection Service (in Region 7 has recommended for the closure of a poultry dressing plant in the municipality of Sibulan in Negros Oriental for alleged failure to comply with all the requirements.
The JLT Dressing Plant, owned by Juan Larry Tan, was padlocked in 2013 on orders of the court following a family feud, but resumed operation last week, allegedly under a new owner.
The facility in Maslog, Sibulan has resumed operation through another company allegedly without the necessary permits from concerned agencies to include mayor’s and business permits from the local government unit of Sibulan, sanitary permits, and an environmental compliance certificate from the Department of Environment & Natural Resources where waste disposal is specified.
It started its operations years back with 4,000 heads of chickens every day until it reaches the peak of 15,000 heads every day due to the increase in demand, but due to intra-family squabbles, it was ordered closed by the court.
According to Edgar Salvoro of the Department of Agriculture in Sibulan, concerned parties and agencies in government are called to a meeting by Mayor Jose Pepe Abiera on Sept. 14 to discuss the recommendation of NMIS for the closure of the dressing plant.
Invited are provincial veterinarian Jaime Villaluz and the regional directors of NMIS in Region 18 and Region 7.
According to Villaluz, as far as he can remember, two brothers of Larry Tan filed the complaint before the NMIS regional office as soon as Tan allegedly allowed the dressing plant to be rented by another company.
Last week, an ocular inspection was conducted by representatives of the NMIS from region 7 together with the DA representative Salvoro, the provincial veterinary officer Villaluz and the office of the mayor. (Juancho Gallarde/PNA)
