AT THE HEART of Dumaguete City in the province of Negros Oriental is a higher education institution that has stood through the test of time. Established on August 28, 1901, Silliman University (SU) made waves in the country’s educational landscape as the first American institution of higher learning in Asia. Rooted in Christian values and the Via, Veritas, Vita, SU continues its mission of providing holistic development to nurture socially responsible citizens with exemplary character, global competence and unwavering faith.

Known for its laid-back and learning-conducive environment for people of all ages and backgrounds, SU is more than just a campus cradled by nature. SU has emerged as one of the country’s most competitive schools outside Metro Manila as it remains to be among the universities in the Philippines with the most number of accredited programs. It has earned a full autonomous status granted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and institutional accreditation (the highest level) from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies in the Philippines, while its Information Technology Education, Nursing Education and Teacher Education programs have been recognized by CHED as Centers of Excellence; and its Biology, Marine Biology and Medical Technology programs as Centers of Development. The United States Agency for International Development has also tagged SU as a Center of Excellence in Coastal Resource Management in recognition of its pioneering work and active involvement in marine conservation.

Leading the University is Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann, its 13th President who has brought her vision of elevating SU as a dynamic gamechanger in its role in education and as a catalyst for societal development through its people, programs and partnerships.

Today, SU celebrates its 118th founding anniversary in gratitude of its recent achievements from May 2018 to June 2019, such as:

– Medical School ranking 9th in the September 2018 Physician Licensure Examination’s Top-Performing Schools

– Institute of Rehabilitative Sciences consistently producing graduates that rank in the Top 10 examinees of Physical Therapy Licensure Examinations every year since 2012, including a topnotcher in the February 2019 exam that also resulted in a 100 percent passing rate for SU

– College of Nursing retaining its 100 percent passing rate for the fourth consecutive year and ranking first in the June 2019 Nursing Licensure Examination’s Top-Performing Schools

– College of Law ranking 8th in the Legal Education Board’s list of the 10 Top-Performing Law Schools in the Philippines, released last June 2019

– Architecture Department producing its first batch of licensed architects after SU examinees garnered a 100 percent passing rate in the June 2019 Architect Licensure Examination.

Behind the success of the University are the Sillimanians that continue to help sustain, preserve and uphold the quality of education that Silliman stands for. For this reason, the highlights of SU’s celebration this year include tributes for individuals who have made an impact beyond the Silliman community: the conferral of Doctor of Humanities degree, honoris causa upon Mr. Mariano Lao, a 2018 Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee in the field of business entrepreneurship; a tribute to National Scientist Dr. Angel C. Alcala; and the 2019 Outstanding Sillimanian Awards (OSA) for alumni who have greatly excelled in their respective fields and continue to embody Sillimanian values. The 2019 OSA recipients are Dr. Ben S. Malayang III in environment and academic leadership; Mr. Moses L. Alcala in applied environmental geology; Dr. Jonathan C. Amante in medical services development; Atty. Myrish T. Cadapan-Antonio in global leadership development; Rev. Dr. Al B. Fuertes in conflict transformation and peace-building; and Dr. Leonilo B. Oliva in educational service.

Another milestone for the University this year is the Centennial Anniversary of the SU College of Education and the Divinity School.

Guided by the theme “Living the Fruits of the Spirit by Grace #SU118,” SU’s 118th Founders Day is not only a time of celebrating accomplishments, but also a time of remembering what the University has always been anchored on: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. As SU commemorates how it all began, it also honors how it was able to endure through the years.
