The number of coronavirus disease 2019 cases in the island-province of Siquijor is now decreasing amid relentless efforts by the provincial and local government units to contain the surge that started last month.
Zella Maye Gascon-Samson, Department of Health-Siquijor representative, in an interview Tuesday afternoon, said the total number of active Covid-19 cases provincewide was 580 as of Oct. 18.
This is much lower compared to last week when the active infections almost reached 1,000, she said.
“We really have a significant decrease in the number of cases now although there are two municipalities that continue to experience a rise in infections, and these are Siquijor and Maria,” Samson said.
Of the total cases, she said 242 are in the municipality of Siquijor and 118 in Maria town, while the remainder is distributed in Lazi, Larena, Enrique Villanueva, and San Juan.
Records at the DOH-Siquijor showed that from Sept. 1 to Oct. 18, the total caseload of the island-province was pegged at 2,696.
Samson attributed the slowdown in Covid-19 cases to the relentless efforts in imposing strict granular lockdowns in areas with high rates of infection and aggressive testing. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)
