City Ordinance No. 94, S.2011 and Ordinance No. 17,S.2003 known as the Anti-Smoking Ordinance commenced July 14, Thursday.

The launching of the “smoke-free Dumaguete” was considered a momentous event bringing together thousands of people from different sectors…the academe, religious congregations, business establishments, different barangays, women’s groups, professionals from various fields of endeavor… to mention a few.

The event was envisioned to send a significant message in a historic and grandiose manner, it was kick off with a flamboyant parade which was attended by people from different walks of life with floats, streamers, and posters expressing their support for the “Smoke-free Dumaguete” campaign.

There were three assembly places: Robinsons Place, Freedom Park, and Silliman University Ballfield.

Participants in the street parade coming from the three assembly points all marched toward Quezon Park for a short program. Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria gave a short message expressing the whole intent of the ordinance for a smoke-free Dumaguete.

Meanwhile, outstanding Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero was in Dumaguete Wednesday afternoon July 13.

His coming to Dumaguete was part of his regular routine of visiting provinces and cities around the country.

In an interview with local media, he was asked about the launching of the Smoke-Free Dumaguete campaign. The reply: “I’m am avid smoker, and so with P-Noy; but whenever I’m in Dumaguete City, I don’t smoke.”

Senator Chiz was instrumental in the recently inaugurated waterless comfort room in the City’s public market, including its renovation by donating substantial amount for the project.
