Solution to traffic problem

The MetroPost editorial (Traffic? No problemo/Feb. 19) failed to mention a solution to the traffic problem which, as a teacher of wellness, I had been espousing for the past 10 years: walking.

This University Town is a “walkable” community, defined as a place where one could walk to at least seven of the essential areas: church, place of work, City Hall, school, market, hospital, shopping center, bus terminal station, library, restaurants, and parks.

In March last year, PE classes at Foundation University were required to participate in a Green Loop Walk starting from St. Paul University in Bantayan, passing through the Negros Oriental State University at the Capitol Area, then Silliman University along Hibbard Ave., then went along Perdices St., and ended at the Foundation Preparatory Academy along Locsin St.

The objective of the Green Loop was for the students of the four major universities in Dumaguete to experience how easy it is to walk the thoroughfare connecting the schools, and for them to be encouraged to actually walk to school from their homes.

How about a Walk to School/Work Friday campaign to be initiated by the heads of the four universities mentioned?
