The Regional Office of the Department of Education in Central Visayas bared the list of winners of the Regional Search for Outstanding SPED Centers and Outstanding SPED Teachers in a memorandum end of October.

West City Exceptional Child Learning Center’s Riza S. Garbo, Miguelita C. Pis-an, and Juliet C. Sonjaco won 1st place in the hearing impairment, mental giftedness, and intellectual disability categories, respectively.

Meanwhile, the regional winner for Outstanding SPED Center is West City Exceptional Child Learning Center.

“I am surprised and humbled by this recognition. Making it to the regional level was never easy as all the nominees underwent extensive screening,” said Garbo. The winners will represent the region in the national search.

In 2011, two Dumagueteños were named outstanding SPED teachers namely Lelibeth N. Duran and Apolinaria A. Sun, who won 1st Place in the field of mental giftedness and visual impairment, respectively in the national search.

Winners were selected based on instructional competence and teaching effectiveness, leadership capabilities, awards received in regional and division level competitions, continuous and dedicated service, professional advancement, and personal qualities and character. They will be awarded with plaques of recognition and cash prizes during the National Conference on Special Education on Nov. 14 in Iloilo City. The search aims to recognize the dedicated teachers who have rendered excellent services in the field of special education. (Claude Sun)
