The Olendo siblings, Sara Francine and Alfonzo Louis Olendo, brought home the bacon as they bested out 29 teams in Category A and seven teams in Category B from public and private (Open Elementary) schools coming from the cities of Dumaguete, Tanjay and Bais and from the town of Valencia, in Negros Oriental in the 7th Don Teroy Memorial Inter-School Chess team Championships, last July 28-29, 2012 at the Negros Oriental Convention Center.
In Category B (8-years old-under), the youngest Paulinians in the competition Janzhergio Emmanuel Masing, Arleah Sapuan and Joseph Rafael Masing were declared third place. The team outshined the others and garnered six special awards. Category A Board 2 Gold and 10 & Under Boys Champion was Alfonzo Louis Olendo, while the Category B Board 1 Bronze went to Janzhergio Emmanuel Masing, the 6 & Under Girls Champion and Youngest Participant Awardee was Arleah Sapuan, a Kinder 2 pupil. The Best Represented School Trophy was awarded to SPUD Grade School Chess Team.
The SPUD Grade School Chess Team was composed of six teams. The participants were Sara Francine Olendo, Alfonzo Louis Olendo, Rae Marco Fernandez, Mary Pauleen Villahermosa, Yvan Nicholas Luzuriaga, Angelo Jay Bacolod, Ric Emmanuel Omega, Jan Erick Angel, Ben Enrique Jariol, Val Jariol, Scout Arvison Escudero, Joshua Urielle Perasol, Thirdy Cuizon, Janzhergio Emmanuel Masing, Joseph Rafael Masing, and Arleah Sapuan. They were accompanied by their coach, Angelie Salma – Bacolod and trainers, Martin Olendo and Arnel Sapuan.
The event was organized by the Negros Club 64 in a joint effort of the Department of Education (Dumaguete and Negros Oriental Divisions), the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program, and the respective LGUs. (SPUD/Rafael Duhaylungsod)
