St. Paul University Dumaguete merged its annual intramurals, the Paulimpiad, with its 111th Founders Week from Oct. 23-29, with the theme Paulinians Go ASEAN: Live the world, light up the world, united colors of Paulinian identity.
According to Rafael Duhaylungsod, external affairs director, the merger will add color to the celebration by combining sports, cultural, and academic activities, as well as to save on the finances. “Instead of spending money for separate dates, we combine these two events because we want to save,” he said. “But the essence of the celebration is still there. We will try this to find out if this is viable.” He also said that it will drive the student body to participate with each other.
The theme was conceptualized by the educational ministry of their congregation. Duhaylungsod said this selection is in response with gearing the nation towards ASEAN integration. “We accepted the new concept of academic programs, and how our graduates can work in ASEAN countries,” he said.
The celebration started Oct. 23, with the opening of the departmental booths and a moving squad contest, which Duhaylungsod said is less risky. “A moving squad is different from a cheerdance competition. It is less risky since there is no throwing; it’s more on down actions. We want our students to perform safely.”
“We like to remind our young graduates that our homecoming is not only intended for the old people or those who have graduated a long time ago. To make it more comfortable for all–especially the old graduates, we have given them opportunities like jubilees and fellowships and for the young ones, we had the foam party.”
Along with the academic convocations and the sports events, the celebration includes singing competitions (Oct. 25), a scientific conference, dancing competitions (Oct. 26), literary events, and a fund-raising acrobatic show (Oct. 28). (Christian Renz Torres/SU Masscom Intern)
