SPUD, SPED bets win chess tourney

St. Paul University grader Alfonso Louis Olendo, honed in various national and regional chess competitions, emerged champion in the premier 12 & Under category of the 2nd Leg Inter-School Rapid Chess Championship, dethroning his older sister in the last round for a perfect six-point score.

Top-seeded Sara Francine Olendo settled for 2nd place. CVIRAA players Joshua Patrocinio of Bais City, and Walton Tenebroso of Balugo Elementary School landed at 3rd and 4th spots, respectively, while Kheigele Cabahog of South City Elementary School was a surprise 5th placer.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Mikhail Renolla of Negros Oriental High School, Rejiene Sienes of South City Elementary School, Juphet Badon of West City Elementary School-Special Education, Cilo Villaluz of Dudmaguete Science High School, and Sancho Merecido of West SPED. Joseph Diaz of Valencia and Rumzy Lee Orcullo also of West SPED were awarded consolation medals for their tie-scores at 10th spot.

In the 8 & Under category, West SPED’s Joshua Dagoy compiled a four-win, one-draw record to claim the crown. Tanjay’s Karljakin Quilantang was at 2nd place, while first leg top placer Arljo Sept Romadia of Bais City got mired at 3rd spot after being stopped by SPUD’s Joseph Masing in the third round.

Special awards went to 8 & Under top female Arleah Sapuan of SPUD, tied with Annie Marie Calunod of Calindagan Elementary School. The 12 & Under top female award went to Sara Francine Olendo.

Cash prizes and medals were awarded to all the placers. Certificates of Participation were likewise handed out to the schools. A Certificate of Recognition was awarded to Little Village Educational Foundation Inc. for having the most number of participants.

The tourney attracted close to 50 participants all over the Province.

The December Grand Finals qualifiers are Tenebroso, Cabahog and Renolla. They joined first leg qualifiers, SPUD graders Marco Fernandez and the Olendo siblings, who both qualified to play in the Shell National Active Chess Championships on July 13 and 14 in SM Cebu City.

Anthony Tenebroso, representing the Office of the Governor, graced the awarding ceremony. Atong Botica co-proprietor Jun Barrera extended invaluable assistance to the event. Roland Celiz and Kristine Raguing acted as arbiter/steward and encoder, respectively.

The chess tourney is sanctioned by the Department of Education, and organized by the Negros Club 64 Inc. headed by its president, Ret. Capt. Hilbert Arinaza, through the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program headed by Paultom Paras. Chess coordinator and tournament director was Florendo Zamora. (PR)
