Over 250 students from Foundation and Silliman Universities and the Manjuyod National High School took part in a sand sculpture contest at the Aroma Beach Resort in Campuyo, Manjuyod last Saturday, June 30.
Hosted by the Foundation University Department of Architecture and Fine Arts, students in teams of 10 were given three hours to transform their plot of sand, using only sand and water, into a sculpture based `on FU’s 63rd anniversary theme: “What do you want to be?”
Three guest judges included the former Negros Oriental Gov. Petit Baldado, Bindoy Mayor Valente D. Yap, and Los Angeles Times photojournalist Luis D. Sinco.
Each sculpture was rated on aesthetics, difficulty and creativity. At the end of three hours, each group explained their creation.
Many groups focused on what it meant to be a good architect, featuring green building and monumental architecture. But others got more esoteric, featuring abstract shapes that represent Inspiration or Adventure. The winning sculpture artfully recreated Leonardo Davinci’s Vitruvian Man — the principal source of proportion among the classical orders of architecture.
The crowd-favorite 2nd place winner featured a giant head and open book, representing knowledge.
After the competition, everyone had lunch together, providing an opportunity for students from high schools and universities to meet, mix, challenge and befriend one another while at play.
