Silliman University and the Bohol Chronicle Radio Corp. signed a memorandum of agreement last week to set up the Zoilo Dejaresco Jr. Scholarship for Community Journalists.

The scholarship in honor of the community journalism pioneer will provide tuition and thesis support for three qualified seniors at the SU College of Mass Communication in the next three academic years.

The scholarship is open to qualified fourth year Mass Communication students at Silliman who come from either Dumaguete or Bohol province.

Upon graduation, the scholar has the option to work with BCRC for at least one year.

Zoilo Dejaresco Jr. was a lawyer-journalist from Dumaguete who pioneered in community journalism in Bohol by founding in 1954 the Bohol Chronicle, the longest existing community newspaper in Bohol. Subsequently, he founded other media businesses, a radio station, and a printing press that, together with the newspaper, have been serving the Boholanos for decades. He was one of the earliest advocates of community journalism, and worked to improve the capacities of journalists all over the country while serving as the third chair of the Philippine Press Institute.

“This scholarship at Silliman was my father’s dream,” said Ely Dejaresco, vice chair of the BCRC board of directors, and alumnus of the then SU School of Journalism & Communication in the 1960s.

SU President Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann thanked the heirs of Zoilo Dejaresco Jr. for their generosity. Seeing the scholarship as more than a gift for deserving Silliman students, she said she expects it to have a great impact not only on Silliman and Negros Oriental but also on the media sectors of other provinces when the arrangement is replicated by other universities and donors.

The MOA signing ceremony was witnessed by SU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Earl Jude Cleope, VP for Development Jane Annette Belarmino, MassCom Dean Dr. Madeline Quiamco, Information Director Bing Aguilar, Masscom faculty and staff, and officers of the Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators.
