SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY CONFERS the degree Doctor of Humanities (Honoris Causa) on Mariano C. Lao, on August 26, 2019 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.

Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann, SU president, to be assisted by Mr. Ricardo A. Balbido, Jr., chair, SU Board of Trustees will award the diploma and don the hood on Lao during the ceremony.

The conferral is one of the highlights of this year’s Founders Day with the theme “Living the Fruits of the Spirit by Grace #SU118” starting August 19-29, 2019.

In 2007, Lao came “home” to Silliman to attend the 50th anniversary of his high school graduation and that started his yearly visits to his alma mater. In 2010 he created the Mariano and Lina Lao Scholarship, a scholarship foundation for high school students from poor families who excel in their studies. Through the foundation, scholarships would be awarded to eight students every year until 2035. Other significant donations of Mr. Lao are the Mariano and Lina Lao Activity Center and the Mariano Lao Technology Laboratory for Innovation, Creation, and Inventions on the SU High School campus.

In 2016, Mr. Lao was inducted to the Order of Horace Brinsmade Silliman, the highest public recognition and expression of gratitude that SU confers on its donors and gift givers, and received an Outstanding Sillimanian Award for business entrepreneurship in 2018.

The conferral will be attended by Silliman administrators, students, faculty, and staff as well as guests as of the honoree’s family, and friends.
