The Silliman University Medical Center Foundation Inc. opened on July 24 the Cardiac Diagnostic Unit of its Heart Institute at the 4th floor of the Medical Specialty Bldg.

This unit is the first phase of a full-service Heart Institute that will include a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, a Coronary Care Unit, and a Cardiovascular Operating Room.

The establishment of the Heart Institute is part of its five-year strategic plan that will position SUMC as a referral center in Negros Oriental and its neighboring provinces.

The Cardiac Diagnostic Unit has the expertise and capability to conduct Treadmill Exercise Test, vascular studies, echocardiography (sonogram of the heart), electrocardiography (ECG), and Holter monitor/ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABP)/Pacemaker Analysis.

The Heart Institute at SUMCFI is a partnership with the Manila-based H.B. Calleja National Heart Institutes Inc. that was founded by Dr. Homobono B. Calleja who established the Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Hospital in Quezon City.

The development model of the HB Calleja Institutes is to establish heart institutes in major medical centers in different parts of the country.

The partnership with SUMCFI is the ninth for the HB Calleja National Heart Institutes, and the first in the Visayas region.

Its vision is to have interconnected heart institutes in strategic regions to enable a network for an exchange of expertise, extensive research data access, more comprehensive cardiac training, and ultimately, improved quality of patient care.

SUMCFI President Roberto Montebon said this partnership with HB Calleja will bring world-class cardiovascular care in Dumaguete, and the nearby provinces of Siquijor, southern Cebu, northwestern Mindanao, and Negros Occidental. (Herbert Timtim)
