Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Censoria Yap led a delegation of punong barangays and department heads for a two-day educational visit in Dumaguete to learn the City’s award-winning best practices in effective waste management that they can replicate to safeguard public health and maintain a clean environment.
Tagbilaran Mayor Yap acknowledged that waste management is a major problem in any growing city, and that since Dumaguete is known as the “champion in solid waste management”, serving as an inspiration and model for other cities in the Philippines seeking to improve their waste management systems, it was “only fitting” that they conducted their benchmarking activity here.
The Tagbilaran delegation toured the Septage Wastewater Treatment Facility in barangay Camanjac, and the Central Materials Recovery Facility which was awarded by the Department of Environment & Natural Resources as Best in Resource Recovery in Region 7.
Engr. Leticia Duran of the Eco-Park Management toured the officials at the Central MRF which houses the equipment that turn garbage into useful byproducts such as plastic chairs, pavers, hollow block,s and other construction materials that can be used for the various infrastructure projects and in the maintenance of roads.
She also showed them how biodegradable waste can be processed into organic fertilizer.
The DENR had recognized the local government of Dumaguete for generating a monthly income of at least P500,000 through its recovery of recyclable materials/waste, while providing livelihood for the waste pickers through proper and sustainable solid waste management. (PR)
