The Dumaguete City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) is eyeing the TB Pavilion in Brgy. Talay as an evacuation site for Dumaguetenos in the event of flooding.
The need for a new evacuation site was strongly felt following the constant rains that were felt in Dumaguete due to the Low Pressure Area in Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, which has now developed into Tropical Depression Agaton.
Engr. Jose Chiu, the head of the CDRRMC, said the TB Pavilion property is ideal and safe for evacuees during floods because it is 300 feet above sea level.
Chiu said the City was also evaluating other sites as alternate evacuation sites although this facility in barangay Talay is the most ideal choice.
Towards this end, he said a Memorandum of Agreement is being worked out between the City and the Philippine Tuberculosis Society for the use of the facility for emergency purposes.
He explained that their estimation was based on their experience during Typhoon Sendong, where Dumaguete experienced the biggest flooding for the first time.
This proposal was earlier broached in June last year, when the City Council passed a resolution naming the TB Pavilion as an evacuation center following the heavy flooding experienced in Dumaguete during Typhoon Sendong. (PIA/Lindy Pagunsan)
