The Rotary Club of Dumaguete South, in cooperation with the Silliman University College of Computer Studies (CCS) will start a computer training program for teachers in the public elementary school system of Dumaguete City to use computer in pedagogy.

Dean Dave Marcial of the SU CCS will conduct the training at the Uytengsu Computer Center on August 24. Teachers who wish to join the training may contact the RC Dumaguete South at their office at Sta. Catalina St. or call telephone 2254718 or 09209104926

This program was made possible by a $31,000 matching grant from Rotary Foundation in 2009 to the Rotary Club of Dumaguete South and a partner club, the RC Park Cities Dallas in Texas, USA for the deployment of computers in Dumaguete City public schools.

A member of the RC of Park Cities, Badieh Naifeh was in Dumaguete with his wife Stella for the past two years to supervise the implementation of the Rotary program.

The Rotary Foundation supports programs in Health, Humanity and Literacy.

Under this program, a total of 49 units of P4 generation Dell desktop computers have been installed last September 2011 at the North City Elementary School and the Piapi High School and under the care of Ms. Jo Dauyan, who supervises the Information Technology (IT) lab, the students use software developed by the Department of Science and Technology to deepen their knowledge in English, Science and Math.

Another 45 computers have been scheduled for installation at the Magsaysay Elementary School in the municipality of Dauin next month, while 10 other units of Dell P4 laptops will be given to the Consuelo Homes for Sheltered Kids, at Barangay Batinguel.

Under the program, the RCDS was also able to deliver five desktop computers to the Dumaguete City Library.

The computer-distribution program is being supervised by RCDS President Dr. Terry Orbeta, RCDS Rotary Foundation Chairman Gregorio L. Uymatiao Jr. and Alfredo Bustamante III the local club administrator of the matching grant funds.

Non-Rotarian partners of the RCDumaguete South computer program are the local office of the Department of Science and Technology and the Algorithm Computer Systems.

In a related development, the RCDS has remitted $500 to Rotary International to match the S1,500 fund-raising challenge by the Bill Gates Foundation. The Bill Gates Foundation had earlier challenged Rotary, through their clubs around the world, to provide a counterpart for their donation of $355 million towards Polio Eradication. The collection efforts in Dumaguete were done through drop boxes along the city businesses among them; Uymatiao Corporation, Merryl Shoes, Sans Rival, Scoobys, Lee Plaza, Unitop, Fortune Mart and Smart Telecoms.
