Four elementary schools in the 3rd District of Negros Oriental recently obtained five mini-computers each as a reward for their good performance.
Dauin Central School, San Miguel Elementary School in Bacong, Manalongon Central School in Sta. Catalina, and Malabugas Elementary School in Bayawan City received the units–also called Internet communicators–last Feb. 2 and 3, respectively, from former Secretary of Finance Gary Teves, who represented the benefactors. Cong. Pryde Henry Teves of the 3rd District is also a known advocate of information communication technology or ICT.
The mini-computers, considered starter kits for computer learning, allow simple encoding and access to the Internet, making these suitable for first-time technology users, particularly Grades 5 and 6 pupils.
Teves, who also served as congressman of the 3rd District from 1987 to 1998, spoke to parents, teachers and local officials present during the turnover ceremonies. He noted the need to equip public schools with modern tools for learning and encouraged parents to invest in their children’s education. During his term in Congress, Teves had advocated for universal primary school and now supports the DepEd’to 12 Basic Education Program.
