Texas Sillimanians send aid to Sendong victims

Houston, TX – January 16, 2012 – The Silliman University Alumni Register (SUGAR), Inc and Texas Association of Philippine Physicians (TAPP) have teamed up to assist and meet the basic health care needs of individuals, children and families affected by Tropical Storm Washi (Sendong) that recently devastated Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. This aid will be accomplished by shipping a 20 foot container of Disaster Relief (DR) filled with medical supplies and equipment with a market value of some $250K USD. The container will be shipped out today from the Centennial, Colorado warehouse of Project Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment (C.U.R.E.)

Project C.U.R.E. is a 501(c)(3) humanitarian relief organization that delivers health and hope to some 122 countries around the world for over two decades. This Outreach program of targeted services through medical equipment and supplies translates to saving lives, providing hope, and finding personal life satisfaction in relinquishment and selflessness.

SUGAR, Inc or Silliman University General Alumni Register Inc is an alumni organization from Silliman University (su.edu.ph), Dumaguete City, Philippines. As a not-for-profit organization their mission includes, support for the educational endeavors of the University as a Christian institution of higher education in Asia as well as promote programs that enhance the well-being of limited resource Elderly in the Houston Metropolitan Area. Additionally, SUGAR, Inc aims to partner and collaborate with other Filipino-American and Filipino associations located in Houston and South East Texas towards mission attainment.

For their part, The Texas Association of Philippine Physicians (TAPP), Inc through their current president, Carmen Sarino-Roy, MD released this statement: “As part of its mission to address the health care needs of Filipinos here, and in our homeland, the Texas Association of Philippine Physicians, Inc. (TAPP) has heeded the call to help our countrymen devastated by Typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and its surrounding areas. In conjunction with SUGAR, TAPP is donating $4000 to cover part of the shipping costs to send this Disaster Relief Container.”

Finally, organizations or individuals are invited to assist in enhancing health care delivery through shipments of needed medical equipment and supplies targeted to specific hospitals in the Philippines.
