There’s been some confusion recently about the interpretation of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology regarding the series of tremors that have been rocking Valencia and Dauin towns of late.
The Phivolcs was quoted by the government news agency as initially saying that these tremors indicate that a volcanic eruption of Mt. Talinis is imminent, only to have a more senior official belie the statement, saying these quakes are not at all due to volcanic reasons.
Adding to the confusion is a physics professor who is so convinced of his own belief that this is a portent of a big volcanic explosion.
So we’re being swayed this way and that with each new information that comes along.
However, either story-that this could be a sign of a bigger quake or a sign of a volcanic explosion-is not 100 percent false. Scientists consider Mt. Talinis as a dormant volcano and the signs all point to that reality, which are the presence of geothermal power, hot springs and sulfur emissions.
We have also experienced strong earthquakes these past few years, making a recurrence very likely.
The question is, are we prepared for any calamity?
We live in the volcanic ring of fire and we also live in a typhoon belt and an earthquake belt. Thus, it should be just logical to prepare for anything that comes our way.
Living in paradise, where the fun starts naturally, and where we expect to be “gotten” by this enchanting city, surely does have its risks.
Don’t be caught unprepared.
