In the early 20th century, an extraordinary act of generosity set in motion a legacy that would resonate far beyond its origins.

Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a philanthropist from Cohoes, New York, donated $10,000 in 1901 to establish what is now Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines.

Though Horace never visited the campus that was named after him, nor witnessed its development, his gift has left an indelible mark on education, and countless lives who are now based across the globe.

At the time of Silliman’s donation, $10,000 was a considerable sum, reflecting his deep belief in the transformative power of education. His gift was not merely a financial contribution but an investment in the future of a nation and its people.

What began as a small school with just 15 students has grown into a premier educational institution, serving thousands of students from all corners of the world.

The impact of Silliman’s philanthropy cannot be measured solely by the growth of the University or the number of graduates produced the past 122 years. It is best understood through the countless lives that have been changed by the opportunities that the University has provided.

Alumni have gone on to excel in fields ranging from education, nursing, medical sciences, business, law, mass communication, performing arts, engineering, agriculture — contributing not only to the Philippines but to global society.

The University’s emphasis on service, integrity, and excellence continues to shape leaders who embody these values in their personal and professional lives.

Silliman passed in 1910 but his vision has transcended time, with the fruits of his generosity continuing to flourish for over a century.

The story of Horace B. Silliman is a powerful reminder of the impact that one person can have in a community. His gift was not about seeking recognition or personal gain; it was about making a lasting difference in the lives of others. In an era where personal success is often prioritized, Silliman’s legacy is a testament to the profound effects of selfless giving.

As we celebrate the achievements of Silliman University, we also honor the man whose vision made it all possible, inspiring future generations to continue his legacy of service and philanthropy.
