The candidates for President, Vice President, and the Senate have officially begun their three-month long campaign to woo voters for the May 9 election.

No doubt, they will be making lofty promises to wipe out corruption, and uplift the lives of Filipinos.

It’s much like courtship, and it is eerily coincidental that Valentine’s Day falls within the campaign period.

Our country has become so divided over such petty matters like the people’s choice of (political) colors, thanks to social media, and the propensity of netizens to call out those who support other candidates as stupid.

And then there’s the conundrum of the CoViD-19 pandemic. We see a lot of businesses that have closed and, along with it, people losing jobs. But what we see around us does not seem to match the good news of a 4 percent economic growth in 2021, and a rosy projection for 2022, which is credited to the reopening of the economy due to mass vaccinations.

The next President will have the responsibility of improving the economy. She or he should have the best team of economic managers who will help propel the country forward.

It would be a good idea to also look at the candidate’s team to get a glimpse of how our country can move on.

The May 9 polls will be a crucial turning point for the country as it will determine our course for the next six years. That is why we have to carefully choose our candidate well.

Six years will be too long for a bad president who could get elected by a bad choice we make in these next three months.
