A group of at least 20 professionals representing various sectors have formed Toastmasters Dumaguete and formalized today its charter application with Toastmasters International.

Toastmasters is a non-profit organization with chapters across the globe that aims for the development of public speaking and leadership skills.

The idea behind the creation of TMD was sparked from a need to provide a formal venue where speech enthusiasts can share ideas through a series of communication exercises and techniques, and allow for them to enhance their interpersonal skills. Its creation was initiated by Einstein Laviña, former professor at Silliman University and now headmaster of BASE School in Amlan, who was active in Toastmasters while in Korea.

TMD, which falls under District 75 of Toastmasters International, pools together individuals from different sectors, including students, who share a common interest in learning how the marriage of words and gestures can make for an effective tool for understanding and linkages. Its initial membership includes representations from the education, business, government and media sectors.

Elected as its first set of officers are: Laviña (president), Dr. Cecile Genove (VP for education), Elve Nasvik (VP for membership), Mark Garcia (VP for public relations), Myleen Sedillo (secretary), Rhoody Brust (treasurer) and Dondon Tingas (sgt-at-arms).

Present during the election was Melinda Sisles, Division D. governor, whose jurisdiction covers clubs in Bacolod and Iloilo, among others. TMD is the 13th club under Division D.

TMD meets twice a month at the 2nd floor of Casablanca along Rizal Blvd. Those interested are encouraged to observe and join the meeting on Nov. 12 at 6pm. (PR)
