Two alleged members of the Communist Party of the Philippines/New Peoples Army were killed in a firefight with members of the Special CAFGU Active Auxiliaries patrol base in Sitio Talalak, Sta. Catalina shortly before sunrise Friday.

In a press statement, Capt. Cenon Pancito, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division, said the patrol base was fired upon by more or less 10 fully armed guerillas.

The militiamen led by assistant detachment commander Cpl. Artieda, fought back and killed one terrorist, who was later identified as Antonio Cardinas, a resident of Sitio Avocado, barangay Talalak.

The remaining guerillas retreated, bringing with them one wounded comrade.

Talalak village chief Tata Bigay told reporters that the withdrawing NPA guerillas eventually abandoned their wounded companion upon learning that the militiamen were closing in on them.

Militiamen recovered the body of the unidentified rebel which had a gunshot wound in the head.

Talalak has a population of almost 5,000 with more than 1,200 households comprising the wide areas of Tamlang Valley, up to the boundary with barangay Dobdob in Valencia.

Recovered items included one long magazine for M16 rifle, two short magazines for M16 rifle, 25 live ammunitions for M16, three live ammunition for M14, one unexploded hand grenade without pin, electrical wire, one empty shell for M203, one bandolier, among others.

However, not a single gun was recovered from the rebels, according to Capt. Pancito. (Juancho Gallarde)
