What kind of architecture would typify Dumaguete?
The United Architects of the Philippines Dumaguete Chapter is looking for new designs that would project a Dumaguete that is in touch with the times.
“Spanish or American design belong to an age past,” said Ned Carlos, president of the UAP Dumaguete Chapter.
Architecture, he explained, has no limit and should be forward-looking. “Bilbao in Spain created a strong brand as a global art center simply by putting up a museum with a distinctively unique design called the Guggenheim; the Sidney Opera House with its shell-looking design has branded Australia for decades.”
Carlos, in a statement, said China’s architecture today doesn’t look any more Chinese much as the architecture of Singapore today doesn’t look any more Singaporean.
Carlos believes that there are many ways by which Dumaguete City can market its products and services through branding. “Buildings, interiors and objects, when they are well designed, communicate concepts, ideas and images.” Good design, he said, “talks” by affecting mood, giving information, facilitating daily life, entertaining and inspiring people.
