Provincial Fire Marshal of Negros Oriental, Chief Insp. William Tacaldo Jr, has called on the public to be careful in using electrical gadgets and appliances.

Speaking during a Kapihan sa PIA held recently in observance of Fire Prevention Month at Bethel Guesthouse, Dumaguete City, Tacaldo said electrical gadgets, when left unattended, may cause fires.

Improper use of electrical gadgets such as battery charger, voltage regulator including appliances, are among the causes of fire. «We should not leave these electrical gadgets or appliances plugged in outlets when not in use,” Tacaldo said.

Proper housekeeping, he said, could prevent fires.

Tacaldo also said that the installation of iron grilles on windows could violate the Fire Safety Code as these would block the exits in case of fire.

Tacaldo urged especially the parents not to leave children alone at home. There should be an adult to watch over the children to prevent them from playing things such as matches that can trigger fire.

Open burning is also discouraged because the flying embers can glow very hot and precede a fire in other places.

The city BFP continues to hold fire prevention drills and advocacy campaigns in schools and barangays.

They also require hotels and commercial buildings with 50 or more occupants to organize their own fire brigade. (PIA7/Lindy Pagunsan)
