The art scene in Dumaguete City is expanding and transforming the mundane into the extraordinary.

From August 4 to September 14, the city’s creative pulse quickens as it hosts “Underwater,” an enchanting display that plunges viewers into the depths of our waterlogged world.

This isn’t just an exhibition; it’s a mesmerizing odyssey that beckons both locals and art aficionados to delve into the unseen splendor beneath the waves.

“Underwater” is a masterful showcase of the marine realm, brought to life through the lenses of Raena Abella, Enrique Bejar, Jo Cudmore, Francisco Guerrero, Margriet Tilstra, and Finn Snow. Organized by the Foundation University Department of Fine Arts (FUDFA) and co-produced by FotomotoPH, this exhibition is proof of the symbiosis of art and science in underwater photography. It’s a celebration of the ocean’s mysteries, inviting guests to embark on a visual voyage that transcends the ordinary.

Conducted at The Henry Resort and Hotels’ Art Gallery, the exhibition’s heartbeat was a series of interactive Photowalks and Slideshows, led by Hersley Casero and Aeson Baldivia (August 2). These narrative journeys unveil the ocean’s secrets, offering a glimpse into the lives of its inhabitants and the challenges faced by photographers in capturing these fleeting moments. It’s an educational adventure that instills a profound respect for marine ecosystems.

For those eager to wade deeper, the Underwater Photography Workshop, led by Margriet Tilstra and Jo Cudmore, offered a hands-on exploration of the craft. Attendees plunged into the technicalities and creative nuances of underwater photography, from selecting the right gear to capturing the essence of the aquatic world. It’s a gateway to a new passion, igniting the desire to document the ocean’s wonders.

The Project Development Workshop took ambition to new depths, guiding participants on how to conceptualize, execute, and refine their underwater photography projects. It’s a creative incubator that teaches technical skills and encourages participants to think critically and creatively about the stories they want to tell through their photography.

“Underwater” is more than just a display of stunning imagery; it’s a call to action.

By intertwining the allure of underwater photography with educational insights and interactive experiences, the exhibition fosters a deeper connection with marine life. It inspires participants and visitors to become advocates for the ocean, championing conservation efforts and preserving the beauty that lies beneath the waves.

As “Underwater” weaves its spell, it stands as a powerful inspiration for marine protection and management. Through its immersive experiences, educational workshops, and breathtaking displays, it not only entertains and educates but also empowers.

It is a clarion call to explore, learn, and protect the hidden treasures of our aquatic world, and motivates everyone to become stewards of the ocean.
