The political scene in Negros Oriental appears stable, and for 2nd District Cong. Chiquiting Sagarbarria, that could only mean that the unity he had forged among the political leaders in the Province is holding.

In a press conference shortly before the new year, Congressman Sagarbarria said he dreams for the political leaders to be fully united for the progress and development of Negros Oriental, unless some parties would deviate from their previous agreement made last year before House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

“For as long as Ipe [Remollo] does not run for Governor or for Congress, I will support him and [his son] Dio with my 23 barangay captains a hundred percent,”declared Congressman Sagarbarria who is on his final term in Congress.

Dio Remollo, he said, can have 30 barangay captains in Dumaguete supporting him for his mayoralty bid in 2025.

Sagarbarria said there are now only three political groups in the Province: the Sagarbarria group, the Degamo group, and the Teves group.

He said he has been talking with Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo and with Dumaguete Mayor Ipe Remollo, but has not talked with former Gov. Henry Teves for quite sometime, so he is not privy to the political plans of the Teves group.

Henry Teves had filed his Certificate of Candidacy for 3rd District Representative last year, before the Commission on Elections announced the cancellation of the special election, upon the request of Congressman Sagarbarria.

Sagarbarria had said he asked for the cancellation of the special elections to ensure the continued peace and order in the Province in the aftermath of the assassination of Gov. Roel Degamo and 15 others on March 4 in Pamplona. (AP)
