I was reading last Friday’s newspaper when I learned that the USAID-UNILAB Foundation has established its fourth advanced manufacturing institute in Mactan, Cebu, in collaboration with Teradyne Philippines, a prominent company in advanced testing and automation solutions. This institute marks the first of its kind in the Visayas region. The partnership aims to enhance the skills of 17,573 workers in Cebu in the fields of Advanced Manufacturing and Industry 4.0.
Why upskilling matters
In today’s fast-paced business environment, industries are transforming at an unprecedented rate, driven by technological advancements, shifting consumer behaviors, and global economic dynamics. To survive and thrive in this landscape, businesses must embrace the concept of upskilling—continuously enhancing the skills and knowledge of their workforce to meet emerging challenges and capitalize on new opportunities.
Upskilling is not just about learning new tools or technologies; it’s a strategic approach to talent development that aligns with a company’s long-term goals and adapts to the evolving demands of the market.
Here’s why I think businesses must adopt upskilling as a core practice:
Staying Competitive in a Digital Age: Technology is reshaping industries, from automation in manufacturing to AI in customer service. Upskilling ensures that employees are proficient in the latest digital tools and platforms, enabling the company to operate more efficiently and effectively.
Attracting and Retaining Talent: Skilled employees are in high demand. By offering upskilling opportunities, businesses can attract top talent by demonstrating a commitment to professional growth. Moreover, employees are more likely to stay with a company that invests in their development.
Driving Innovation: A workforce that is constantly learning is more adaptable and creative. Upskilling fosters a culture of innovation, where employees are encouraged to experiment with new ideas and approaches, leading to breakthrough products and services.
Enhancing Customer Satisfaction: As customer expectations rise, upskilling can help employees deliver superior service and support. Whether it’s through better communication skills or a deeper understanding of customer needs, upskilled employees can significantly enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Adapting to Market Changes: Market trends can shift rapidly, and businesses must be agile to respond. Upskilling equips employees with the knowledge and skills to pivot, when necessary, whether it’s entering new markets, adopting new business models, or diversifying product lines.
Fostering a Culture of Continuous Improvement: Upskilling is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. It instills a mindset of continuous improvement, where employees are always looking for ways to enhance their performance and contribute to the company’s success.
What the Bible says about upskilling
Even God is in favor of upskilling. Romans 12:2 advises, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
We inhabit a society that relentlessly attempts to mold us into versions that do not reflect our authentic selves. It is all too common to become ensnared by the expectations of the world around us, leading us to stray from our true nature.
The wisdom of Romans 12:2 urges us to resist these societal molds. It emphasizes that the journey of personal development and self-betterment begins internally, with the rejuvenation of our minds.
This scripture acts as a potent reminder that we should consistently reassess and evolve our thought processes. Through this introspection and transformation, we can more effectively identify what is truly virtuous and ideal, thereby aligning our lives with these principles.
The message is not to succumb to the norms of the world, but rather to undergo a metamorphosis through perpetual education and advancement. This verse encapsulates the core of personal development and self-improvement.
However, we also need to be reminded that personal development and advancement are not just about ourselves. “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”
This verse from 2 Peter serves as a poignant reminder that personal growth and self-improvement extend beyond ourselves. They are also about deepening our connection with God.
The verse exhorts us to perpetually advance in the grace and understanding of Jesus Christ. This entails not merely acquiring knowledge about Him, but also actively embracing His grace in our daily lives.
Not an option but a necessity
Here in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental, I am hoping that upskilling the workforce becomes a priority. In the case of government units, upskilling matters most because we are talking about the delivery of basic services and serving our fellowmen.
Upskilling is not just an option for businesses; it’s a necessity. By investing in their workforce’s continuous development, companies can ensure they remain competitive, innovative, and resilient in the face of industry changes. Upskilling is the key to unlocking a company’s full potential and thriving in the dynamic business landscape of the 21st century.
