The Valencia Senior Citizens Literacy Advocates last week launched their community-based ‘Books-on-Wheels’ Mobile Library Initiative, a program designed to inspire children from kindergarten to Grade 3 to develop a love for reading in both their mother tongue (Visayan) and in English.
“Beyond literacy, this initiative fosters inter-generational relationships by uniting senior citizens and young learners in a shared journey of storytelling and discovery,” said Virginia M. Stack, major proponent of the project.
The ‘Books-on-Wheels’ Mobile Library Initiative is a community-led, non-profit program aimed at improving literacy, and fostering a love for reading among children in Valencia’s underserved areas.
She said this initiative will be managed and facilitated by retired senior professionals with background in education, literacy, and community work. “By bringing books directly to the children, we aim to create equitable access to quality reading materials, engage young minds in learning, and inspire collaboration that enriches the community,” Stack said.
The Valencia Senior Citizens Literacy Advocates is inviting local governments, sponsors, and community partners to support their initiative. “Your contributions — whether financial, material, or volunteer time — will help us provide opportunities that will empower young leaners,” she said.
