A new settlement for the victims of Typhoon Sendong will soon rise in Valencia, Negros Oriental.

Valencia Mayor Edgar Teves said that the GawadKalinga Village will have an initial of 50 houses which will be located in a one hectare lot owned by the local government in Sitio Jamali, Barangay Liptong, Valencia.

The housing project will have its groundbreaking rites on April 26 and is being funded by the San Miguel Corporation with the help of former Finance Secretary Gary Teves.

Among those invited in the groundbreaking ceremony are former Finance Secretary Teves, and Gawad Kalinga provincial head Bonifacio Pilas.

San Miguel Corporation has pledged 100 houses for Sendong victims and those living in critical areas along the rivers of Banica and Okoy in Valencia.

With the GK handling the community organizing, prospective recipients will have to provide a sweat equity which is based on the concept of bayanihan.

The community will be organized through formation and livelihood programs. (JCT/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
