V-Day Silliman Chapter, a global campaign to end violence against women, will hold a benefit show for victims of the recent earthquake which hit Negros Oriental.
A second running of Eve Ensler’s A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer (Writings to Stop Violence against Women and Girls), the show will be held at the Luce Auditorium on Thursday, 1 March 2 at 8 pm.
V-Day’s Spotlight Campaign on a global perspective will again focus on the women and girls of Haiti. It will highlight the high levels of violence there and the increased rates of sexual violence since the devastating earthquake that took place in January 2010.
All funds raised through the Spotlight Campaign will be used to support a revolutionary national program in Haiti lead by a coalition of women activists – including longtime V-Day activist Elvire Eugene – that is addressing sexual violence through art, advocacy, safe shelter, and legal services.
On the local front, the V-Day Campaign has chosen to donate substantially its proceeds to the 1st District earthquake victims, and in part, to the Young Advocates for Theatre and the Arts, a local community theatre group founded by Dessa Quesada-Palm, the show’s director. The group continues to propagate today’s young people to take a stand on current issues through theatre performances for free in the local communities, whose work has been awarded among the Ten Most Accomplished Young Organizations in 2009.
The show includes performances by Jacqueline Veloso-Antonio, Jessica Frances delos Santos, Hochi Benitez, Francel Bagaforo, Myrish Cadapan-Antonio, Arlene Delloso-Uypitching, Dessa Quesada-Palm, Naddie May Orillana, Ernest Hope Tinambacan, and Suzanne Lu-Bascara.
The show is co-presented by the SU Student Government and co-sponsored by Skycable and Ads Unlimited.
Tickets available at the SU Psychology Department, SUSG, and the Sen. Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law & Development. (PR)
