The Department of Education Dumaguete City Division has initiated a radio-based program as a strategy in the implementation of Mother Tongue-Based-Multilingual Education to reach more students and parents.
Under the K to 12 basic education program, the school division continues to implement the MTB-MLE this school year.
According to City Schools Division Supt. Dr. Ramir Uytico, the Sugilanon sa Kahanginan radio program had been a very big help to DepEd in the implementation of MBL-MLE as it widens the people’s knowledge on the dialect by reading and speaking Cebuano or Visayan phrases.
The MTB-MLE initially introduced 12 major languages in the Philippines which include Cebuano, aiming to improve the pupils’ language with socio-cultural awareness.
Uytico said that only Dumaguete is implementing this kind of radio program for the children. “I am very happy and grateful to know that our program is not only heard here in the Province but all over the Philippines,” he added.
Using the mother tongue as a medium of instruction is a concept of learning that removes language barrier between the teachers and pupils.
“The DepEd is still working on other different strategies and activities to be conducted for the students using the Cebuano or Visayan dialect,” Uytico said, asking the parents’ understanding and open-mindedness.
Sugilanon sa Kahanginan is supported by 2nd District Cong. George Arnaiz. It is aired on Power 91 GYGB-FM and on 801 DYWC-AM by the first Sunday of July. (PIA/with reports from Lovellein Catubay)
