What is cement bamboo frame technology exactly, and what makes it so resilient?
This is a building technique that utilizes bamboo for the framing structure of the walls and roof. It has been used for over two-hundred years in South America where it is called “bahareque” and with the advent of modern technologies for cement and earthquake/typhoon engineering, the technology is proving adaptable for modern demands and sustainable housing solutions. In the construction industry, bamboo stands out as one of the industry’s few renewable materials available for use today.
From the outside, it is hard to tell that the house is built with bamboo. As suggested by the name, cement bamboo frame technology is a mix of materials — using each as they are best suited for tropical design.
The bamboo provides the structural frame for the walls and roof but is completely encased by a thin layer of cement plaster to protect the bamboo from water. Horizontal and lateral bracing with bamboo culms helps to ensure both flexibility and strength to the structure if subjected to strong winds or earth tremors.

In fact, three test homes that Base built in Ginubaltan, Albay in 2013 are still standing today after receiving the full blast of Typhoon Glenda and subsequent storms in that typhoon-prone region (BluPrint, Bamboo Social Housing).
The bamboo is joined together using threaded rod and bolts, reinforced with cement pumped into the connecting pieces. This makes installation easier, stronger and more consistent than traditional joinery which is highly dependent on the skill of the individual craftsman as well as materials used.
