The recent purchase by the City of Dumaguete of the Catherina Cittadini School in barangay Calindagan was a wise decision.
By buying the 31-year-old school, the City will be able to move two public schools—the City Central Elementary School and the Calindagan Elementary School– into 1.8-hectare campus.
The new home of the two public schools has more than a dozen buildings, a gymnasium, laboratories, cafeteria, chapel, a road network with adequate parking space, playground, dormitory, and other structures.
Perhaps the two schools will be merged into just one school so the administrative costs of having two principals, two assistant principals and office staff, will be reduced.
But wait, there’s more – by transferring the two schools to the new campus at a very good price of a little less than P10,000 per square meter, the City also stands to get back the land that is being used by the two public schools, as these lots are owned by the LGU.
This is also a win for the Ursuline Sisters of Somasca, the owner of the Catherina Cittadini School, Aside from finding a buyer, they are assured that the new owner will continue the legacy and mission of educating the young forever.
So we have to credit Mayor Felipe Remollo and the City Council, headed by Vice Mayor Maisa Sagarbarria, for spotting a good opportunity and making the right and timely decision.
Such good fortune is hard to come by, these days.
