The Youth Advocates through Theater Arts (YATTA) is the Visayas partner of the Philippine Educational Theater Association — Advocate Rights to Safety Zone project which aims to promote positive discipline and children’s rights.

Award-winning PETA director Maribel Legarda and musical director Jeff Hernandez were in Dumaguete from Oct. 27 to 31 to mentor the cast and staff of the YATTA production.

The play, Aaahh…Bakus, is adapted by Junsly Kitay from the original script of Liza Magtoto, and is directed by Nikki Cimafranca, with music by composer-songwriter Earnest Hope Tinambacan.

YATTA Artistic Director Dessa Quesada-Palm is excited to bring the play to the communities and schools. “We know that corporal punishment is deeply embedded in our culture. It is our hope to shake some of the notions that justify this practice, to start the conversation, and to assert the perspective of children as bearers of rights as well as responsibilities.”

Aaahh…Bakus is slated to be performed in December at the Little Children of the Philippines and at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium before it goes on the road. (YATTA PR)
