The MetroPost, your weekly newspaper serving the Dumaguete and Negros Oriental community worldwide, received last Thursday in Manila the prestigious honor of having the Best Editorial Page among all weekly newspapers in the Philippines, during the 2023 Community Press Awards of the Philippine Press Institute or the national association of newspapers.
This is the second time we won this award, the first being in 2007 when the MetroPost were only seven years old.
The MetroPost also won the award for Best Edited Community Newspaper in 2020, and three Best in Photojournalism awards in between those years.
These awards validate our strength as a community newspaper.
When the challenge of going digital first crossed our mind, we asked ourselves what would be our competitive edge when news and information seems to be all over social media. (Little did we know then that some of these social media “news sites” simply copy our top stories verbatim or translate them to Cebuano, and claim it as their original work.)
So proud are we of our select opinion writers who write about various issues based on their areas of expertise, that we actually regard them as our competitive edge in the digital era.
After all, we need to make sense of all the information out there, and the opinion columns in the MetroPost are our contribution towards empowering our readers.
And we have been proven right. The panel of judges for this competition noted that the MetroPost “exerts earnest efforts at engaging its readers in timely, relevant, and well-thought out discourses around public interest issues, including, but not limited to, topics that have local ramifications, and that give readers pause. The variety of insights and perspectives (gender-inclusive, among others) afforded to readers on a host of issues through the editorial page is also positive proof that the paper strives to live up to its editorial mission, and keep itself relevant, and an essential part of community life beyond its fundamental task of delivering news to the public.”
So this Best Editorial Page award is a tribute to our hardworking columnists who see the news from various angles, and who give us fresh extraordinary insights on what we see on a daily basis.
Our snappiest salute to our MetroPost columnists!
