Dumaguete City Mayor Ipe Remollo has thrown his support for the creation of the Negros Island Region.

In an interview with Dumaguete Press Club President Juancho Gallarde, Remollo said all he sees are advantages and no disadvantages with having a one-island region.

He said with a Negros Island Region, connectivity within Negros Island will be improved because we can now make more highways, making the delivery of goods and services more efficient.

Remollo added that with an improved road network, insurgency will also be diminished

“It will also improve tourism because tourist spots will be more accessible,” he added.

He said there will be new Asst. Directors, Regional Directors and employees. More people will be employed, there will be more jobs.

“As far as the language barrier is concerned, we can adapt. If we don’t understand Ilonggo, then speak in English,” he said.

No one, he said, will go to heaven or hell over this issue because this is simply a administrative matter.

But, recognizing the opposition of the Diocese of Dumaguete over the creation of the new regionf, the Mayor acknowledged that anyone is free to comment about the creation of the NIR. “The NIR will not affect the church because their boundaries between Dioceses are not the same as political boundaries.

“Not to interfere in the church’s way, but I’m sure they will also not like government interfering in a purely church setup,” Remollo said.  (AP)
