The Department of Environment & Natural Resources in the Negros Island Region will determine which caves in the municipality of Mabinay have tourism value and which of them are dead or active.
Mabinay Mayor Ernesto Uy said the assessment and inventory is more of an informative undertaking as the town braces itself for the development of more tourist spots in the municipality.
He said that only 30 of the almost 400 caves in Mabinay have been explored; six have been developed, namely, the Bulwang cave, Panligawan cave, Pandalihan cave, Crystal cave, Odlomon cave, and Cagado cave.
An access road leading to another cave is also being developed, the mayor disclosed.
The assessment coincided with the town fiesta of Mabinay, where they have the Langub festival, showcasing dances that promote the caves in Mabinay.
Mayor Uy also disclosed a river rafting activity is also being explored in Bugsok falls, one of the majestic water falls of Mabinay in Barangay Banban, 13 kilometers from the poblacion.
It can be reached through motorcycles or “habal-habal”.
The mayor said he is optimistic that when fully developed, the Bugsok falls river rafting will be an exciting and memorable experience. (JFP/JG)
